- Minimally invasive treatment — no cuts or stitches required
- Faster recovery and less discomfort compared to traditional gum grafts
- Immediate cosmetic improvement and enhanced gum contours
- Multiple areas treated in one visit in many cases
Dr. Shelby is proud to offer this advanced treatment option to patients seeking a more comfortable path to healthier, more attractive gums.

Common Questions About Our Services
Explore answers to the most common questions about periodontal treatments and procedures, dental implants, and our office.
What is a periodontist?
A periodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease, gum recession, and issues related to the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontists also place and maintain dental implants.
What is periodontal disease? What are the symptoms?
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place, often caused by poor oral hygiene.
Common signs of gum disease include:
- Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
- Gum swelling or redness
- Persistent bad breath
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Gum recession (longer-looking teeth)
If you notice any of these, early treatment can prevent further damage.
How can I prevent gum disease?
Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are key to preventing gum disease.
What is the Pinhole Surgical Technique?
The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive way to treat gum recession. Instead of cutting and suturing tissue like in a traditional gum graft, this method uses a small entry point to gently reposition your existing gum tissue.
It’s typically more comfortable than traditional grafting. There are no sutures or scalpels involved, and most patients report minimal discomfort and a quicker recovery.
What are dental implants and how do they work?
Dental implants are permanent tooth replacements. A titanium post is placed in the jawbone to act as a root, and a crown is attached to restore the visible tooth. Implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
Can I still get implants if I’ve had bone loss?
Yes. If you’ve lost bone due to gum disease or missing teeth, Dr. Shelby may recommend a bone graft to rebuild the jaw and make implant placement possible. This is common and part of many successful treatment plans.
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Shelby?
No, you don’t need a referral. Many patients come directly to our office for care, especially if they’re experiencing symptoms like bleeding gums, gum recession, or missing teeth.
Does your office take insurance?
We work with most major dental insurance plans, including Delta Dental, and will help you understand what’s covered. Payment options are available for uncovered procedures.
